Turning 5: Moving from Pre-K to Kindergarten for Students with Disabilities

Families of children with disabilities born in 2016 will participate in two processes this year: the Kindergarten Admissions process and the Kindergarten IEP process. We’ll discuss how to get special education services for students with disabilities as they move from preschool to kindergarten, applying to kindergarten, parents’ rights, advocacy tips, and how to get help navigating these two processes.

Turning 5: Understanding the Kindergarten IEP
Tuesday December 15, 1 – 2:30 pm;
Tuesday January 12, 6 – 7:30 pm; or 
Tuesday January 26, 9 – 10:30 am

Want to focus on your child’s kindergarten IEP? Learn about the process of creating the IEP, steps you can take to prepare for the IEP meeting, and programs and service options that are available for children with disabilities in kindergarten. We’ll go over the what you should expect this year, parents’ rights, advocacy tips, and how to get help during this process.

Turning 5: Kindergarten Admissions
Wednesday December 9, 1 pm – 2 pm;
Tuesday January 5, 6 pm – 7 pm;
Tuesday January 19, 9 am – 10 am

Want to focus on kindergarten admissions? This workshop will cover the process for applying to DOE public schools, including tips for researching schools, ways to submit an application, understanding how school offers are made, and what to do when you get an offer. We’ll also cover how to apply to charter schools, parents’ rights, advocacy tips, and how to get help.
