Tem’s Story

From an early age, it was clear that Tem was struggling in school. His mother felt sure that he was being placed in the wrong learning environment for his needs, in classrooms where he was not understood or supported. Tem was a bright student, but had significant emotional and behavioral needs, and struggled socially. No school seemed able to support his social needs in addition to his academic needs, and the family was eventually so discouraged that they turned to home instruction. But once his mother found AFC, everything changed.

From the first conversation with an advocate, I felt heard, and our struggle was validated. Thanks to her hard work, my son was able to begin 9th grade at a school that was a perfect fit for him.”

With help from his advocates, Tem was placed at Fusion Academy in a smaller classroom environment that provided him with supports for his social and emotional needs, in addition to rigorous academics to help him reach his full potential. Through all four years of high school, Tem and his family worked alongside AFC to make sure he could stay at Fusion. In the correct placement, Tem was able to make friends and feel supported, and his mother saw clearly how Tem’s confidence and sense of self-worth improved.

This year, Tem graduated from high school and has big plans for the future.

Thank you for saving my son. He will soon begin his journey of self-discovery and hopefully become fluent in Spanish, while taking a gap year before college. He is one of your many success stories and we will always be filled with gratitude for making that possible.”
