    Every child in New York State has the right to a sound, basic education—and providing such an education requires adequate and equitable funding. More than 115 organizations are calling on Governor Hochul and the New York State Legislature to revamp New York’s outdated school funding formula to ensure schools have the resources necessary to provide a high-quality education to all students, with particular attention to those who have the greatest needs.

We urge the Administration to include increased funding for DOE social workers for students living in homeless shelters.     Today, the City announced its intention to implement the recommendation of the Mayoral Leadership Team on School Climate and Discipline to modify the DOE’s discipline code to end suspensions for students in kindergarten through second grade and increase support for positive behavior interventions in schools. AFC staunchly supports the elimination of suspensions for these students and the use of a developmentally sound approach to address the behavior of young children instead.
