  • LGBTQ+ Students: Know Your Rights in NYC Schools

    Jun 4, 2026

    1:00 PM –2:00 PM

This Pride Month, join us to learn more about the rights of LGBTQ+ students in New York schools. New York schools have robust gender-inclusive policies related to names, pronouns, bathrooms, locker rooms, sports, dress codes, and more, which all schools must follow. We’ll provide a brief overview of the laws, regulations, and guidelines protecting LGBTQ+ students, as well as practical information about how to enforce and use these protections.

This event is also available in Spanish.

LGBTQ+ Students' Rights in NYC Haven't Changed

In July of 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can ban transgender girls and women from playing on female school sports teams. Despite this decision, the State and City laws that protect transgender students in NYC have not changed. In New York City, students have the right to participate on athletic teams that are consistent with their gender identity.
