This is a guide for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQ+) students and allies in New York City Public Schools. It lays out LGBTQ+ students’ rights and explains what to do if these rights are violated.

LGBTQ+ Students' Rights in NYC Haven't Changed

In July of 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can ban transgender girls and women from playing on female school sports teams. Despite this decision, the State and City laws that protect transgender students in NYC have not changed. In New York City, students have the right to participate on athletic teams that are consistent with their gender identity.
