Politico (PRO) | For the ninth consecutive year, more than 100,000 New York City public school students were homeless, a new report found.
Details: A total of 146,733 students — about one in eight children enrolled in schools — were homeless last school year, according to an analysis of state Education Department data by the nonprofit Advocates for Children of New York.
The latest findings represent a 23 percent increase from the previous year, which saw 119,320 pupils without permanent housing — driven in part by a record number of immigrant families and asylum-seekers.
The city has exceeded 100,000 homeless students annually since the 2015-16 school year.
This comes as the state conducts a study of its outdated school funding formula. A coalition of 100 organizations — including Advocates for Children of New York — have called for changes, including additional money for students in temporary housing.
