brown students in special education programs"},"template":"","class_list":["post-3891","article","type-article","status-publish","hentry","article_type-afc-in-the-news","topic_tax-students-with-disabilities","misc_topic-special-education"],"acf":{"component_standard_hero":{"":null,"excerpt":"","short_description":"","button":{"":null,"link_type":"off","page":null,"file":null,"title":""},"image":null,"disable_share_icons":false},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<p>12.22.2022 | Amsterdam News | Randi Levine, policy director for Advocates for Children of New York, said that based on the data, Black students disproportionately rank in high numbers in \u201cschool aged\u201d special education classes compared to other races while simultaneously missing out on critical access to early intervention and preschool special education when needed.<\/p><p>\u201cIn preschool there\u2019s a different situation relative to overall enrollment, children of color are underrepresented among preschoolers receiving special education services while white children are overrepresented,\u201d said Levine.<\/p><p>Levine said there certainly is a \u201cworry\u201d that Black and brown children that aren\u2019t in early special education will need more intensive services later on in school, but there isn\u2019t an official casualty as to why the inverse happens in preschool.\u00a0<\/p><p>In a report conducted by Advocates for Children, researchers found that in the 2019-20 school year, 1,222 students were waiting for a preschool special education seat in a classroom, the shortage of seats being especially acute in the Bronx and southern Queens. <a href=\"https:\/\/amsterdamnews.com\/news\/2022\/12\/22\/the-under-and-overrepresentation-of-black-brown-students-in-special-education-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>\u0645\u0636\u0645\u0648\u0646 \u067e\u0691\u06be\u06cc\u06ba<\/em><\/a><\/p>","":null,"settings":[]}}],"relationships":{"":null,"article_type":[83],"topics":[28],"misc_topics":[198]},"misc":{"search_results":{"":null,"excerpt":"","featured_image":""}}},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>The under- and overrepresentation of Black &amp;
