Last school year, 64% of students living in shelters were marked chronically absent, compared to 28% of their peers in permanent housing.<\/p><p>The money to hire workers in shelters would come from $33 million in federal stimulus funds, the advocates say. The workers, called community coordinators, would help homeless families with any school-based needs. The city has already committed to hiring 50 new community coordinators with federal cash, but advocates say that\u2019s not enough, and are pushing the agency to use the remainder of the federal money to hire 100 more.<\/p><p>\u201cWith 60% of students living in shelter chronically absent from school, it is important to have someone on the ground in the shelter who can partner directly with families, determine why a particular child is missing school, and resolve the problem,\u201d 30 advocacy organizations wrote in a letter Thursday to Mayor Adams and schools Chancellor David Banks.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/education\/ny-homeless-advocates-urge-doe-to-hire-more-staff-20220428-a3iwuybs6jgkficp5rvzpiof5i-story.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>\u0645\u0636\u0645\u0648\u0646 \u067e\u0691\u06be\u06cc\u06ba<\/em><\/a><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/education\/ny-homeless-advocates-urge-doe-to-hire-more-staff-20220428-a3iwuybs6jgkficp5rvzpiof5i-story.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em><\/em><\/a><\/p>","":null,"settings":[]}}],"relationships":{"":null,"article_type":[83],"topics":[22],"misc_topics":false},"misc":{"search_results":{"":null,"excerpt":"","featured_image":""}}},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
