It builds on\u00a0a broader agenda<\/a>\u00a0focused on affordability outlined by Hochul during her State of the State address last week.\r\n\r\nHochul\u2019s proposed budget also called for updates to the state\u2019s school funding formula, an issue expected to take center stage in education budget discussions this year. Known as Foundation Aid, the formula was originally created in 2007, and in some cases relies on decades-old data to determine how much funding is sent to school districts.\r\n

For years, advocates, lawmakers, and other education officials have\u00a0called for updates<\/a>\u00a0to the formula, with some arguing it requires\u00a0a complete overhaul<\/a>. But the governor\u2019s proposed updates \u2014 which were among the suggestions put forward by the state\u2019s Board of Regents and\u00a0a recent report<\/a>\u00a0issued by the Rockefeller Institute \u2014 could potentially result in New York City receiving a smaller funding increase, advocates warned Tuesday.<\/p>\r\nKim Sweet, executive director of the nonprofit group Advocates for Children of New York, said even when combined with the swap to using economically disadvantaged student counts, the proposed changes would result in less overall funding for New York City schools.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe current federal poverty threshold for a family of four is just $32,150,\u201d she said in a statement. \u201cTrying to make ends meet on $30,000 means something very different for a family in New York City than elsewhere in the State.\u201d\r\n\r\nHochul\u2019s proposal did not include several changes to the formula sought by city advocates and officials, such as additional funding for students in temporary housing, or extra dollars to implement the state\u2019s class size mandate for New York City schools.","":null,"settings":""}}],"relationships":{"":null,"article_type":[83],"topics":false,"misc_topics":[193,184]},"misc":{"search_results":{"":null,"excerpt":"","featured_image":13096}}},"yoast_head":"\nFor statewide school cellphone ban, Hochul proposes $13.5 million to cover costs -
