  • NYC Education Dept. to create first division dedicated to supporting kids in foster care

    12.19.2021 | NY Daily News | “Separation itself is a trauma,” said Erika Palmer, a supervising lawyer at Advocates for Children, and often comes alongside other stressful events that led to a child being removed from their home. 

    Advocates say the Education Department historically hasn’t allocated the resources or staffing necessary to meet the complex needs of foster kids. 

    “There’s a number of laws and legal protections” including the right to transportation and to remain at the same school after placement in foster care that schools may not fully understand, said Palmer. “Without folks at the [Education Department} with expertise on that population, schools just don’t know about it.” Read article
