But when Lillian was in middle school, that seemed like a distant possibility. \u201cLillian was having a lot of problems,\u201d her mother Maxine remembers. \u201cI know the baby that I have. She was a brilliant little girl, and I didn\u2019t know what happened. She wasn\u2019t focusing, she didn\u2019t have any friends, and teachers would complain to me that she would sit there and not participate.\u201d\r\n\r\nDetermined to exhaust all her options, Maxine called her health insurance to ask what supports they could provide. The customer service representative gave her AFC\u2019s number on the spot and encouraged her to reach out for our help.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone wp-image-5520\" src=\"https:\/\/advocatesforchildren.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/lillian2-e1777487921587-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"lillian and her mother at her high school graduation\" width=\"447\" height=\"447\" \/>\r\n\r\nMaxine\u2019s AFC advocate worked to secure an expert evaluation, which revealed that Lillian had been struggling with ADHD and anxiety and identified additional support that she needed. When Lillian\u2019s school refused to provide that support, AFC requested an impartial hearing to secure a more appropriate school placement for Lillian, one where she could receive the 1:1 supports, multisensory teaching approach, counseling, and other services that her evaluations recommended.\r\n\r\nAt her new school, Lillian blossomed.
