Anselmo, un jeune hispanophone timide de 17 ans, r\u00e9cemment immigr\u00e9 d&#039;\u00c9quateur, est partiellement aveugle et malentendant, et il lisait en deuxi\u00e8me ann\u00e9e. Malgr\u00e9 tous ces facteurs, Anselmo avait \u00e9t\u00e9 plac\u00e9 dans une classe de dixi\u00e8me ann\u00e9e uniquement en anglais, sans le niveau de soutien dont il avait besoin pour participer efficacement. Lorsqu&#039;Anselmo a eu des difficult\u00e9s, le DOE a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 qu&#039;il devait \u00eatre plac\u00e9 dans le district 75, un district scolaire s\u00e9par\u00e9 destin\u00e9 aux \u00e9l\u00e8ves ayant des besoins graves n\u00e9cessitant un soutien plus intensif. M\u00eame si Anselmo avait certainement besoin de plus de soutien que celui offert par sa classe actuelle, son d\u00e9fenseur du dossier AFC a inform\u00e9 Rosa qu&#039;il existait d&#039;autres options qui n&#039;exigeaient pas un niveau aussi \u00e9lev\u00e9 de s\u00e9gr\u00e9gation de la part de ses pairs non handicap\u00e9s.","":null,"settings":["disable-top-padding"]}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_image","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_image":{"image":5531,"helper_width":"narrow","settings":{"":null,"settings":["disable-top-padding"]}}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"AFC began working with Rosa and Anselmo to locate an appropriate classroom, where he could obtain the special education and language support he needed.\u00a0 \u00a0Knowing it could take a while to identify a class that could fully support Anselmo, we secured a Spanish-speaking paraprofessional so that he could better participate in his current class in the interim.\r\n\r\nIn the fall, we found a school with the right setting for Anselmo and helped work through some bureaucratic hurdles to make sure he was enrolled. We're thrilled to report that Anselmo is now attending school in the right setting \u2013 a small, bilingual class with a special education teacher and Spanish language supports \u2013 and is doing well. Sadly, what Rosa and Anselmo experienced is not uncommon for recently arrived students and families, who may be unfamiliar with their rights and the options available to them.
