Anselmo, un t\u00edmido joven de 17 a\u00f1os de habla hispana que recientemente inmigr\u00f3 de Ecuador, es parcialmente ciego y tiene una discapacidad auditiva, y le\u00eda a un nivel de segundo grado. A pesar de todos estos factores, Anselmo hab\u00eda sido colocado en un sal\u00f3n de clases de d\u00e9cimo grado donde solo se impart\u00eda ingl\u00e9s y sin el nivel de apoyo que necesitaba para participar de manera efectiva. Cuando Anselmo, comprensiblemente, tuvo dificultades, el DOE determin\u00f3 que deb\u00eda ser ubicado en el Distrito 75, un distrito escolar separado destinado a estudiantes con necesidades graves que requieren un apoyo m\u00e1s intensivo. Aunque Anselmo ciertamente necesitaba m\u00e1s apoyo del que le brindaba su clase actual, su defensor del caso de la AFC le inform\u00f3 a Rosa que hab\u00eda otras opciones que no requer\u00edan un nivel tan alto de segregaci\u00f3n de sus compa\u00f1eros no discapacitados.","":null,"settings":["disable-top-padding"]}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_image","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_image":{"image":5531,"helper_width":"narrow","settings":{"":null,"settings":["disable-top-padding"]}}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"AFC began working with Rosa and Anselmo to locate an appropriate classroom, where he could obtain the special education and language support he needed.\u00a0 \u00a0Knowing it could take a while to identify a class that could fully support Anselmo, we secured a Spanish-speaking paraprofessional so that he could better participate in his current class in the interim.\r\n\r\nIn the fall, we found a school with the right setting for Anselmo and helped work through some bureaucratic hurdles to make sure he was enrolled. We're thrilled to report that Anselmo is now attending school in the right setting \u2013 a small, bilingual class with a special education teacher and Spanish language supports \u2013 and is doing well. Sadly, what Rosa and Anselmo experienced is not uncommon for recently arrived students and families, who may be unfamiliar with their rights and the options available to them.
