Hochul\u2019s election-year budget proposal on Tuesday included record investments in education to the tune of more than $39 billion \u2014 but that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean New York City schoolchildren will come out ahead.\r\n\r\nAdvocates are concerned that the governor\u2019s plan fails to address tweaks made to a key formula ahead of the current academic year, which resulted in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/05\/08\/new-formula-for-n-y-state-education-aid-turns-out-to-be-bad-news-for-nyc\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/05\/08\/new-formula-for-n-y-state-education-aid-turns-out-to-be-bad-news-for-nyc\/\">hundreds of millions dollars less<\/a>\u00a0than the city\u2019s school system had expected to receive from the state.\r\n\r\nWithout further changes, the city could see itself shortchanged again this year when the dollars are divvied up among the state\u2019s roughly 700 school districts.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe formula itself is more than 15 years old, relies on outdated and incomplete measures of student need, and has not evolved to reflect rising costs, particularly in large urban districts,\u201d the Coalition for Equitable Education Funding, an alliance of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/advocatesforchildren.org\/coalition-for-equitable-education-funding\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/advocatesforchildren.org\/coalition-for-equitable-education-funding\/\">more than 120 advocacy organizations<\/a>, wrote in a statement.\r\n\r\n\u201cWithout further changes, New York City students will continue to be shortchanged.\u201d\r\n\r\nAdvocates say children are bearing the brunt of the shortfall, and fear the coming fiscal year will see the same outcome.\r\n\r\n\u201cThese groups of students often miss more school than their peers, and their academic outcomes are abysmal,\u201d said Randi Levine, policy director at Advocates for Children, part of the school aid coalition. \u201cIt\u2019s important for districts to get the resources they need to ensure that students who are homeless and students in foster care are getting academic and social-emotional support to succeed in school.\u201d\r\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-cube_article\" class=\"dfp-ad dfp-cube_article\">\r\n<div class=\"htlad-cube_article\" data-unit=\"nydailynews.com\/news\/education\/cube_article\" data-targeting=\"\">\r\n<div id=\"htlad-5\" class=\"htl-ad\" data-unit=\"nydailynews.com\/news\/education\/cube_article\" data-lazy-pixels=\"350\" data-sizes=\"0x0:300x250|750x0:300x250|1000x0:300x250\" data-prebid=\"0x0:cube_article-Mobile|750x0:cube_article-Tablet|1000x0:cube_article-Desktop\" data-refresh=\"viewable\" data-refresh-secs=\"30\" data-refresh-max=\"100\" data-targeting=\"{&quot;pos&quot;:[&quot;Cube_Article&quot;]}\">\r\n<div id=\"htlad-5-gpt\" class=\"htl-ad-gpt htl-size-300x250\" data-google-query-id=\"CJ-vs_-gqpIDFc1XCQkdqu4iUg\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>","":null,"settings":""}}],"relationships":{"":null,"article_type":[83],"topics":false,"misc_topics":[193,183,184]},"misc":{"search_results":{"":null,"excerpt":"","featured_image":14185}}},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Gov.
