The results erased what officials referred to as last year\u2019s \u201cimplementation dip\u201d as students and teachers adjusted to the new curriculum.\r\n\r\nIn math, 56.9% of students scored proficient or better, up by 3.5 percentage points.\r\n\r\nWith the major gains, the city\u2019s students slightly outperformed the state in both reading and math. The Adams administration touted the proficiency rates as the system\u2019s highest in more than a decade, though experts caution against making comparisons to pre-2023 data, when ELA and math tests were aligned to new standards.\r\n\r\nAmong the most promising signs in Monday\u2019s data were great strides by the city\u2019s youngest test takers. Third-grade students, who learned to read under the new regime and were spared COVID-19 school lockdowns, saw their ELA scores rise by 12.9 percentage points.\r\n\r\nKim Sweet, executive director of Advocates for Children of New York, called third-graders\u2019 advances on reading exams a particularly \u201chopeful signal that we are headed in the right direction.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cAt the same time,\u201d Sweet said, \u201cthe continued disparities by economic need, race\/ethnicity, and disability status make clear that many students need extra support to become strong readers.\u201d","":null,"settings":""}}],"relationships":{"":null,"article_type":[83],"topics":[100],"misc_topics":[193]},"misc":{"search_results":{"":null,"excerpt":"","featured_image":13427}}},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
