Director of Litigation NEW!Advocates for Children of New York (AFC) is a not-for-profit organization in New York City with a mission of ensuring that all children have access to quality public education. AFC’s work combines five strategies, including direct representation of individual children and parents, community education, public policy, litigation and information dissemination about the public schools. AFC works on behalf of children and youth who are at greatest risk of academic failure due to poverty, race, ethnicity, disability, homelessness, immigration status/limited English proficiency, or involvement in the child welfare or juvenile justice system. AFC is seeking a Director of Litigation who will be responsible for its federal and state court civil rights litigation docket. The Director will supervise a staff of two litigation attorneys, other AFC staff who spend part of their time on litigation, and legal interns. The Director will also work extensively with co-counsel from major New York law firms. Responsibilities -Oversee and lead AFC’s Litigation Docket and Department -Assess and Develop Potential Cases Qualifications The candidate must have significant experience in federal litigation. Experience in civil rights, education law, and/or disability law and class actions strongly preferred. Must also possess strong leadership and management ability. Post-Graduate Fellowship Opportunity
Advocates for Children of New York, Inc. (AFC) is a not-for-profit organization in New York City with a mission of ensuring that all children have access to quality public education. AFC works on behalf of children and youth who are at greatest risk of academic failure due to poverty, ethnicity, disability, homelessness, immigration status/limited English proficiency, or involvement in the child welfare or juvenile justice systems. AFC’s Juvenile Justice Project (JJP) addresses the school and disability-related problems facing court-involved youth. The JJP helps young people access the educational services they need for academic success and to avoid further delinquency and incarceration. The JJP employs several complementary strategies: • • Direct representation of individual children and parents; Organizations such as Equal Justice Works and the law firm of Skadden, Arps offer fellowships to enable recent law school graduates to work full-time at public interest organizations for one or two years. AFC seeks to sponsor a recent law school graduate for a post-graduate fellowship in education advocacy in AFC’s Juvenile Justice Project beginning September 2009. Information and Resource Associate AFC seeks a Information and Resource Associate who will will update, write, and develop content for, and expand AFC's websites, particularly www.insideschools.org. Specific assignments will include visiting and reviewing schools, contributing to the Insideschools blog, and updating school information on the website. He or she also will recruit and supervise volunteers and interns to assist with the Insideschools site and conduct outreach to new audiences and community-based organizations. Qualifications:

Post-Graduate Fellowship Opportunity in Advocates For Children’s Juvenile Justice Project NEW!
Advocates for Children of New York, Inc. (AFC) is a not-for-profit organization in New York City with a mission of ensuring that all children have access to quality public education. AFC works on behalf of children and youth who are at greatest risk of academic failure due to poverty, ethnicity, disability, homelessness, immigration status/limited English proficiency, or involvement in the child welfare or juvenile justice systems.
While the New York City Department of Education boasts great improvements in the delivery of school services to a number of students, data released by the DOE regarding special education services delivery and outcomes has been limited and difficult to interpret. AFC is coordinating the ARISE Coalition, a diverse group of other organizations and individuals who have come joined together to provide a collective and powerful voice on behalf of students with special needs in NYC. The ARISE Coalition seeks to compel system reform to improve special education, promote greater transparency and accountability of the education system, and to assure more positive outcomes and options for all students.
The ARISE Coalition is seeking a volunteer policy intern to
• Conduct data analyses of a number of recent reports from the DOE regarding the provision of special education services in NYC; and
• Assist the Coordinator of the Coalition to organize and conduct interviews and surveys of students with special needs, parents of students with special needs, advocates, service providers and educators working with students with special needs for a joint report to be put out by the Coalition.
Skills and qualifications:
Estimated time commitment: Prefer a minimum of 4 hours a week. Project is ongoing.

Our internships are unpaid, but provide a great opportunity to gain exposure and hands-on experience in the sector of public interest law.
